Kamishibai (kah-mee-she-bye) are a form of
storytelling that began in Japan. Kamishibai stories are told using
pictures and words simultaneously. The stories are on illustrated cards
which are presented to the story audience. The text for the stories is
on the back of the cards which the storyteller uses as a dramatic
script to enchant the audience. The stories can be presented in a
portable little wooden theater. In fact, the Japanese word “kamishibai”
translates literally as “paper drama”. American audiences, both
children and adults, gain an appreciation for traditional and modern
Japanese tales through the elegant “paper drama” of kamishibai.
