Cross Cultural Experience:
Students gain experience in a storytelling form unique to Japan. They
also learn about traditional Japanese customs and values through its
folktales.
Skill Development: Students are guided in developing original stories using the kamishibai form. Emphasis is placed on key story elements, developing stories through both text and image, and learning to write and illustrate for a live audience.
Community Building: Students create stories that are designed to be shared with each other, other school members, and families. The process of creating and then sharing stories generates excitement, enthusiasm, and love of learning.
Resource Enhancing: The Kamishibai Project residency programs can be created with the classroom teacher, to fit within a time frame and a curricular focus best suited to the needs of the class. They can allow for the involvement of a variety of school resources; for example, the art, library, and technology programs. Or kamishibai residency programs can be self-contained.
Flexible Collaboration: The Kamishibai Project residency programs include access to a large number of kamishibai stories during visits, and information on borrowing kamishibai. The programs include knowledgeable and skillful teaching that is specific and predictable as well as creative.
