Children at the K-4th grade elementary school in Hancock NH were introduced to kamishibai, a Japanese storytelling art, during a one day residency with Dianne Clouet on March 9th, '09. On this snowy Monday, the children saw and heard stories with a range of characters, including a chick, a greedy monkey, a startled princess, and a fierce ogre. Several story extention ideas were used to deepen the children's involvement and understanding of the stories. The kindergarten made a graph to measure the characters' popularity among the children. The first and second grades created story maps, depicting key story elements with pictures and words. The 3rd and 4th grade retold a famous Japanese folktale, The Monkey and the Crab , by making a large pictoral scroll.
The teachers at Hancock Elementary, with the help of the CONVAL School District Arts Enrichment Educators, plan to extend the kamishibai form introduced by Dianne with a variety of class kamishibai projects.
It's true that Dianne is my little sister...but she convinced her older brother to experiment with this oddly modern yet traditional media for teaching literacy skills to my students (most of whom are ELL)...and they loved it!
As a superintendent of schools (New London, CT) I highly recommend Kamishibai as a tool.
It is captivating... and kids "get it".
